Insight: Need-to-Know: Single-tap Wi-Fi toggle returns in Android 17 Beta 3 update

Google’s Android 17 Beta 3 update brings a number of improvements and new features. Among these is the reintroduced single-tap Wi-Fi toggle for quick control.

Android users have been faced with the problem of managing Wi-Fi on Google’s operating system. It started with the Android 12, when tapping the Wi-Fi tile no longer toggled the connection directly. Instead, it opened a panel with network options that needed an extra step to switch Wi-Fi on or off. While there were complaints about the design, Google didn’t reverse it until the latest Beta update was released.

It turned a simple action into a two-step process and many users didn’t find it convenient. The absence of a direct toggle was constantly a complaint since it slowed down a simple task users performed multiple times daily. Things became different with the Android 17 Beta 3, as the single-tap Wi-Fi toggle function finally returned. Beta users can experience a quicker interaction.

The Wi-Fi toggle comes with a flexible behaviour depending on tile size. In the 2×1 Quick Settings layout, tapping the left side of the tile instantly toggles Wi-Fi. There’s no change on the right side. It displays the connected network and opens the detailed pop-up with available networks and settings.

For the smaller 1×1 tile,a single tap directly enables or disables Wi-Fi, just like older Android versions. A long press opens the full Internet settings page. We expect the upgraded toggle to make it to the stable version of the Android 17 operating system that’ll be released on or before Q3 this year.
